New building technologies are one of the important ways in which building energy consumption can be reduced, and indeed, technologies are available today to make buildings far more sustainable. However, there tend to be a variety of barriers that prevent or limit adoption, such as high first cost, unfamiliarity and a reliance on business-as-usual practices, misalignment of costs and benefits among decision makers, and performance and reliability concerns, to name a few. Lowering these barriers is necessary to increase adoption rates, but incremental change through technology improvement and substitution might be insufficient to solving the energy dilemma. We also need to look at more radical, potentially far reaching solutions that challenge conventional approaches to the production, delivery, and consumption of energy in buildings. This points to a need to look at integrated systems and combinations of technologies that have the potential to have greater impact.
This panel will come together to attempt to address initiatives and efforts towards these challenging and difficult aspects that require action from people, process, and products
